Precautions of the Undertaker
A bit excessive in its every feature,
Overlong, a silver time-of-year,
The Easter lily may belong to nature
Less than to Der Rosenkavalier.
But resurrection too is artificial,
Or at least in nature has no part.
Not as the symbol of a last reversal
But for scent so strong it will assert,
The strident calyx shares the open coffin.
Decades of the growing competence
Of the embalmer have not put back life in
Thoughts of Lent, or heavy floral scents,
Although their lily blooms again at Easter.
Think of it as of the silver rose:
The fragrance is a cover; is an ester
Whose whole truth none but the bearer knows.

Piece in the Shape of a Pear Shape
The value of the diamond
Is artificially kept up.
If it had thoughts of suicide
DeBeers could open up its vaults.
The beauty of the stones, however,
Would be neither more nor less.
So how to value rarity
That is not rare? The commonplace
Is not that common, though to tell
Would undermine democracy.
So much admired is “in the rough”
We more or less repress the noun
That it applies to. Value, then,
Is neither mineral nor cut
Nor polish, but the hope: the word
Forever. Crowns and crowned heads fall;
Tiaras hit the auction block;
That fairest neck a choker chokes
Some revolution’s noose will find.
Hubristic, that a solitaire
Should foretell union, marriage.
The word’s root meaning is alone.

OPPOSING COLONIZATIONS
Pasa thalassa thalassa
The continent has narrowed here toward Panama,
And where it narrows, rises. There are certain peaks
From which the oceans both are visible.
The Greeks once more are proven fallible: the sea
Is not, here, everywhere the sea. The one is blue;
The one is green; the nearer has the higher tides.
The White God vowing to return, if he could see
From this our eminence, might scorn the galleon,
Its raped Atlantic, and adopt the balsa raft:
A second coming out of Polynesia, trade
And not rapine the motive; or, more altered still,
Return as fire; from this volcano smite the land
In one blow, over time to make its soil more rich,
Or create diamonds in recompense for gold-Geology as conscience money, sacrifice
Rewarded, if hereafter. On the heart cut out
There is not statutory limit; and, as haze
Turns gray the green Atlantic, and as cloud
Hides the Pacific altogether, what is clear
Is how the crater and the sulfur, if not Hell,
Are models of it, as are temples. as are mines.

Numbers game
8000 meters. Arbitrary,
Although where the world divides.
Above, adventure without guides;
Below, the dull preliminary.
Would English measure put it lower?
Set at 20,000 feet
The line where ease and challenge meet,
And knowledge backs off from the knower?
It should not. 7000 yarder
Has a sound of football gains.
Achttausender’s appeal remains,
The vision of some final border,
As little meaningful as would be
Y2K to any tribe
Whose calendar does not subscribe
To Gregory; as drip tubes would be
To a Roman. IV’s four, as
A.D.’s nothing to a Jew.
It’s wholly up to me and you,
The numbers; what we write the score as.

Not All That Long A Way To Tipperary
Across the Channel on the Southern English Coast
Artillery in Flanders could be clearly heard.
Too unambiguous and too immediate
To be an omen, distant thunder all too near,
It must have been as if the iconography
Of trench warfare--the body parts and mud and wire-Had been converted into sound bytes, digital,
But on unprecedented scale. Or did those stills
Come later, unaccompanied, as one might say,
By any sound track? Goggles of a gas mask hide,
Or dim, such images encountered at close range.
What form of earphone might shut out those frequencies
Imagination is? They are the silence heard
When V-2 rockets cease to burn, or monitors
In ICUs shut off; the wavelength at the edge
Of ESP and consciousness, or the obscure
Seen: Paris in the sights of German fire control;
Below the Zeppelin the fogbound London docks;
The Nagasaki teahouse by Ground Zero; scouts
Who call down on them friendly fire, to be, at once,
Incinerated by it. Look war in the eye,
Who only hear it. What you hear may after all
Be omen, but in retrospect. Napoleon
Experimenting with a Chunnel. (Do not sneer;
The French dug Suez). Shots heard round the world
Need not be metaphor, as Krakatoa proved.

Navarraise
(Navarre Beach FL)
The Sound is gray; the Gulf is green.
A strip of sand is white between.
Waves in the Sound are no great stir-Domesticated, as it were.
High breakers in the Gulf, eight hours
Beyond their gale, have still its force.
They can be quiet also, these.
A shining nothing in no breeze.
One must not speak of waves as wild
That have been tame. Let them be styled,
In more precision, feral.
Lifeguard, trust them at your peril.

National Trust Handout
What are a few looted mansions compared to their looted lives?
--Bertolt Brecht
The mansions, in the first place, are not few,
And one does not compare the incommensurate.
The loot, the life, may not or may equate.
Is it the looters’ heirs who put on view?
A revolution, in a strictest sense, is not.
It is a half-turn only--height brought low,
Blood of the bluest, suffering as if for show
In settings that can overpower plot.
Tax-free, the mansions can be that which they were,
Blood being one thing, stone another. All who loot
Make future decorators rich, and have as fruit
Left-leaning hack historians, the known despair
Of Brecht in private. Roll the wheel again,
Or wait, since hope--raw ideology-Turns of itself, and red bureaucracy
Has too hauteur, inheritance, disdain.

Mers-el-Kebir
July, 1940
Negotiation fails. It often does.
And from Gibraltar, ally, enemy,
The British sail. The French Fleet at Oran
Must not be handed into German hands.
This is not Salamis, and certainly
Not Jutland. Any fool can see who won,
France being belly up inside the mole
And thirteen hundred of her seamen dead.
Pearl Harbor’s bodies hardly bettered that,
Suggesting enemies are not more threat
Than treachery by friends. Algeria
In independence has presumably
No interest in either flag; the ships,
Victorious or capsized, have long since
Gone under the acetylene for scrap.
Darlan, DeGaulle, and Churchill, if not one
With Nineveh and Tyre, are not entire
In reputation. Said to turn its back
Upon the sea, Oran has reason to.
It’s the Iscariot of navies, shunned.
The giant naval base is still in use
(So too is Singapore’s) a too large home
For too small Coast Guard cutters. Marx, Islam,
Shell, Eurodollars battle now, to leave
An abstract oil slick. NATO frets
As Moors outflank it; readers of Camus
Misunderstand and mislocate his plague;
To the distress of the Prudential Rock,
Gibraltar plans to put casinos up.

Last Things
Some say the world will end in fire; some say in ice.
Have they not heard of entropy? The best advice
May be, inure yourself to tepid. Heat exchange
Sees to it Armageddon has a narrow range.
If you would have extremes in your Apocalypse
Encounter it within: a time bad conscience whips
Toward frenzy or self satisfaction laxly crowns.
And although Judgment Day has had its ups and downs
Outside revival tents, it has returned in force
As terrorism, ozone holes, and melting cores
In power plants, a retribution so widespread
As not to segregate the living from the dead
Or match the sinner with the sin. In soulless wards
In which indifference as a consensus lords,
The complicated tortures on the Sistine wall
Will level out to ordinary medical;
An age's ever vaguer sense of sin dispel
The King James Version's phraseology of Hell,
Although its "thief come in the night" will surely stay;
Its nagging hint "The hour we know not, nor the day."

Interlude and Last Act
December, 1940, in the Dutch East Indies,
Indochina, and the Belgian Congo. Free,
More free than ever they desired to be, from “Home,”
The colonies,, that is to say, the colonists,
May not or may absorb the truth that Germany
Is now to Europe in the measure they have been
To Asia and to Africa. One year remains
Of their new self-determination. French and Dutch
Governments-in-Exile are just as impotent
As, for the moment, are the independence groups.
The King, another Leopold, is no Free State;
A Vichy, rather, or a Dunkerque antonym.
What threatens White control is also what protects:
The raw materials the Axis covets force
Its rivals to defend. In time it will emerge
That neither oil nor rubber is the prize.
The Congo has uranium. In its remove
And its self-centeredness itself a colony,
Los Alamos creates a rising sun its own
To be sundown on metropolitan Japan.
There is no twilight in the tropics, Old Hands say,
But dusk of course there is; and cities of the West
On notice in the East experience as grace
Distinction’s missing difference: the fading days
That summarize. As Dutch as windmills, the counterweights
Above the bridges over Javanese canals;
The Exposition des Arts Decoratifs
Surviving in the all too permanent redoubt
The Banque de l’Indo-Chine put up as flagship house
Along the Saigon River; and, to white somewhat
A sepulcher, the Boulevard Albert Premier
In Leopoldville. Sloth and heathen folly rouse
Themselves and by and by are proved to be no fools,
If no less heathen. Who spoke endlessly of “Home”
Prefer to be elsewhere. Aruba takes them in;
The newly independent Cote d’Ivoire; upwind
New Mexico. Few of them have to make their beds
And let alone are forced to lie in them.
A second generation, downwind colons, farm
New Caledonia, or test the bomb themselves,
Or go out willingly to man the rocket base
In French Guiana--French and pestilential still-To the bewilderment, no doubt, of Dreyfusards.
