Report of the Monuments Commission
If Freedom has, or is, a goddess, should
Not Slavery have? Captivity als Weib.
As deity, no whips and chains; too much
Indicative of rare perversities,
And Slavery, over time, has been the norm.
Let her equipment be, like Justice's,
A balance. For the prisoner of war
Death on the battlefield or servitude;
For youth, rebellion or conformity;
For age, the poorhouse or the family
(And which is Purgatory, which is Hell?)
For women without dower, take the veil
Or walk the street; for women with, endow
A nunnery and hope to wed for love
Or find no lover's not a gigolo;
For cotton pickers seasons in the sun
Or codfish, God, and Boston consonants.
Put up in Washington along the Mall
An image of the Captivessa, borne
High on a ship of marble. Never ask,
Divinity, by whom your ship is rowed.
There's brooding Lincoln at the Mall's far end,
Brooding no doubt on how to keep in line
His border slave states. Let the goddess have,
For escort, gunboats, camels, you and me,
Sheikhs, maharajahs, and a Krupp or two.
Krupp workers' choice was, after sabotage,
A game of shower head roulette. And, too,
The Lowell mill girls, who could be "improved"
Or have a little fun, as Southerners
Were quick to see, and, not to spare the Jews,
Triangle Shirtwaist workers, unimproved.
Our prisoners political spill out
Their cell blocks, but could give up practicing
Marcuse, who lived himself in bourgeois ease.
For statuary goddesses there need must be
Consorts, and since we have become of late.
Unwilling to distinguish Jefferson
From Belgian Leopold, let's add on both.
Upon the Mall the marches come and go,
Our sad charade. And from the great white dome
Freedom looks on, always de haut en bas.

Rebuilding
A city with an altered skyline finds itself
Much less itself: an alphabet with verticals
Left out and low rise vowels keening endlessly.
As if expert professionals had brought it down,
In July, 1902, in Un-Venetian tact,
The Campanile fell exactly on its base,
Frightening pigeons and the travel agencies,
But killing no one. Futurism, Beaux-Arts pomp,
The Art Nouveau are at their height. There is some thought
Replacement ought not replicate the Renaissance.
Designs come forth that can have only been conceived
As a revenge on Canaletto. One might live
With Trajan’s Column opposite San Marco, or,
If need be, lighthouse, but a Cairo minaret?
“Reconstitute the devil that you know” is code
As sound, as plausible for city planning boards
As for the least imaginative Satanist.
Ask not for whom a Campanile is put up.
It’s put up as a framing structure for the bells,
On principles that ought to be acoustical ,
But seldom are. If simply filling out the scene
Serves, what was there before will firmly close the wound.
But in the echo of the confidence that fell
The bell is tolling for the island no man is
That every man fragments by his self-centeredness.

Rebuilding New Orleans
A pity Albert Speer is not available.
His Berlin Congress Hall could easily replace
The Superdome, his miles of concrete colonnades
Disguise and reinforce the levee battlements.
There is no reason that his Nuremburg Sports Field
Could not be replicated for the Sugar Bowl,
Flat arches bridge the Pontchartrainsee. Let Ward Nine,
For contrast, crowd in "worker housing" from the 20s,
And if workers will not live there, gentrify.
Abandon local color altogether. Have,
For yellow star, bandanas and the tell-tale lip
Of trumpet players. Praline mammies, jazz has-beens,
Belong, if anywhere in brave new worlds, in camps
Off-site behind barbed wire. The leper colony
Can be reactivated. Crematoria
Mean that above ground burial can be phased out;
A human quicksand, ossuary Dutch Boy dike,
Ash of the disadvantaged, hosed, re-silt the coast;
In coffee, lacking chicory, ersatz, but what?
Ground acorn, as in World War II, or powdered mummy?

PR at Tuskegee
Aware of it? Of course he was.
How could he not have been, as small
A world as any campus is,
The sciences especially.
Could he have blown the whistle? Yes,
And put his own research at risk.
It would have been peanuts indeed
Without grant money. He was raised
By Whites, you know. Live-in or such.
A Hoosier missionary pair.
At least they educated him.
Too well, perhaps. He may have learned
Their missionary prudery.
“It” would have seemed for him payback-Sin paying out its wages still.
And, after all, the men were fed.
The mess of pottage may apply.
That being what the doctors thought,
One gathers. If they thought at all.
Even their phrase was not thought up.
“Bad blood” is how the Blacks themselves
Describe it. Let us both be frank:
All medicine is in a sense
Experiment on human subjects.
Do we Calvinists equate
The sins Omission and the sins
Commission? If we do not act
Our sins Omit will take the day,
They being easier. Somewhere
Between the silver and the salver
We scrub up. First do no harm?
Improving peanuts does no harm.

Polly Wants a Cracker
However many sacred birds
Have spread across mythology
Great wings oracular, not one,
It would appear, has been a parrot.
Revelation, if it comes
Comes only through interpreters.
Is our own speech, its cry of want
Unleavened, at once too contained
And too predictable, too flat
For priesthoods to elaborate?
Reading the droppings in a cage
Is more the vatic way. But why,
In spite of these allowances,
Did not that savage who first heard
His very words come back at him
Raise up the bird as god? Hurt? Spite?
Or the perception from the first
That parroting is simply that,
And speech as speech does not reveal.
The wafer of divinity,
Pauline, will not be yours. In flight
Or in the cage, among the skull,
Wreck, bones--a grim familiar, you;
Echo of Long John Silver, or his cue?-For all your gift of piracy,
No tongue you learn can ease the want.

The Pleasures of Slave Owning
Raw imposition of the will;
Enjoyment of another’s ill.
Of being rich enough to buy;
Of knowing what you bought will die
And need no upkeep. Once they breed
Replacements, they repay one’s greed
With interest. The distant threat
Of insurrection you forget,
Or think of as a cheap frisson.
To mention it is not bon ton.
Of what one may indulge or waive…
Between a sex-slave and a slave
Is there distinction? I am white
And they are black. Chaos? Old Night?.
But one can learn from negatives.
It is by opposites one lives.
A tin automaton could do
The most of what slaves do, but who
Would trade a toy, a tinker’s trash,
In place of laying on the lash.
And by and by--one knows the look-They give up hope and learn to cook.

Paying the Rent in Key West
Dark ingots stacked inside the warehouse door
In full view from the sidewalk, document
The salvagers’ success. A queue has formed
Already to invest in further search.
Over the years small finds--a dated coin,
Earrings in a contemporary style,
A Monte Carlo Method, as it were,
To do a random sample of the ship’s
Surviving cargo manifest--built up
Anticipation, also bringing in
Sufficient capital, risk capital,
To keep the divers going, as did film,
The awful souvenirs, a tourist cruise.
What one would like to know is, was the site,
Now proved invidiously genuine,
First seeded with an antique coin or two?
Or items common on a manifest?
Prize scholars, known for intrepidity
(Famed, how courageous academics are),
Who for a State historical property
Would have all treasures legally impounded…
You will not check a galleon small change
Brought up--or taken down; it is the same,
The danger--by those unpaid divers dead.
If I should write The Glass Menagerie
Would it occur my early one-act plays
May well have been discreetly plagiarized?

Nothing to Declare
The world is ending, you. What will you save?
They told me, Trumpeter, he who would save
Must lose. Shall I recount my losses?
Know,
You vainly divested, that they lied; that no
Life paupered of its greed is worth exchange.
It is of every dream the brute small change;
Ambition’s self; desire’s enabling act.
The trumpet throat, your summons--very act
Of judgment--are the altruist denied?
The maw of Moloch?
Say: are bail denied.
All ends that is, Thou Fool. What will you save?
Fool Thou, to tell the so well rid to save.
Rid of that lover, avid, I used to be;
Of his complacent heir I’ll now not be.
I bring instead a sleeve--heart--in nor out:
An empty slate; a greed for wiping out.
