Roots
Exhumed as fossil after eons--just how many
Science wrangles--Peking Man, no ape bad penny,
Vanishes again, and has not yet turned up:
Research’s overflowing, under flowing cup;
In evolution’s argued, time-extended frame
A temporary fossil’s fifteen-minute fame.
Ancestor of the terracotta soldiers? Not.
Proto-Red Guard, perhaps, from that much dug up spot
Gray matter being sorely missing. Since the bones
Are on French leave from Sino-Japanese war zones
We know Sinanthropos from photos and from casts.
The film and plaster, violence, confirm our pasts
As intimate, embarrassingly. If the find
Is found again, we’ll have to value it in kind.
We’ll recognize ourselves: Old Adam, Chairman Mao,
Che, Pol Pot. Kin so much less than angel, Ciao.

Piltdown Man
Discussions with Dr. Louis S.B. Leakey came around to Piltdown
and his conclusion that Teilhard de Chardin had been the forger.
Spencer, Frank. Piltdown: a Scientific Forgery
Jaw of an ape, skull of a man.
I seem to have no master plan.
But then, in all who walk erect
There seems to be some disconnect
Between the tongue and brain.
Do not, therefore, at once disdain
An ad hoc fossil's lack of speech
(Hard palate too far out of reach
Even for Xhosan clicking sounds)
As lack of meaning, or as grounds
For thinking language too cannot
Be counterfeit, an inbred plot
Of Ionesco and of Joyce.
Or, speaking in their coded voice,
Teilhard de Chardin, who may be
That very forger who did me.
But all the past is construct, I
No more than any other try
At fleshing out its unlike bones.
The recent past is all unknowns,
And has its own false artifacts:
Foucault and other vaudeville acts.
If most that rises must converge,
What's left behind has no such urge.
It may be Beckett, Java Man,
The Cardiff Giant, Ossian.

Pilate Project
I do not trust the evidence of fingerprints,
Or think unique each crystal any snowstorm mints.
Who in the first place has examined every flake?
The patterns may in fact redouble, give or take
Infinity. Perhaps their repetition mimes
That rumored ever-wider spacing of the primes.
Mathematicians whose promotion hangs on fractals
May at last derive the odds (when pterodactyls
Yield Poppaea asses’ milk and donkeys fly).
No tale an old wife tells can presently out-vie
Pure science. Does the maddest one of us believe
Statistics is not prejudice worn on the sleeve?
Or particle uncertainties not just a phase
Of Heisenberg’s desire to have a thing both ways?
Infinitesimals, as Bishop Berkeley knew,
Are how the calculus keeps problems out of view.
If we succeed in focusing our telescope
Upon the deepest reach of space how can we hope
To know it? What is it supposed to look like? Light
Beyond the trembling cross-hairs of a rifle sight?
Corpses autopsied for the teleported tar
Of smoke at second hand showed nothing, insofar
As all had died of something else. If ozone goes
We’ll get along on less, as the Tibetan does.
The Procurator’s “What is truth?” was more than wit.
There is a god of lies, and science may be it.

Palaeontology
The archaeopteryx may be a forgery,
A wash of feathers on a fossil dinosaur.
No hint of flying; some hint of gliding What if Man,
Peking Man, Java Man, were forgery? Would then
Ourselves, as concept, fly? Or be the Icarus
Of anthropologists, a final Piltdown Man,
Or meltdown man, a goal of Fundamentalists.
Creationism can at least create from scratch.
Upon the bones of scrawny Lucy rests the Eve
Whom science blames as current mother of us all.
Neanderthal clay figurines, bodies obese
And coiffure Harpo Marx, would seem to contradict
A thin ancestress, or confirm what we all know,
That fashions change. Meanwhile, between the overweight
And underweight, the fossil record can be filled
With any missing form the scientists conceive,
As arbitrary as the Bible Belt‘s first man,
Regarding whose brain size or stooped or upright gait
We do not have to argue. Homo sapiens
Creates a chain of being out of filler blanks,
Or forges Adam as his own original.

Numbers game
8000 meters. Arbitrary,
Although where the world divides.
Above, adventure without guides;
Below, the dull preliminary.
Would English measure put it lower?
Set at 20,000 feet
The line where ease and challenge meet,
And knowledge backs off from the knower?
It should not. 7000 yarder
Has a sound of football gains.
Achttausender’s appeal remains,
The vision of some final border,
As little meaningful as would be
Y2K to any tribe
Whose calendar does not subscribe
To Gregory; as drip tubes would be
To a Roman. IV’s four, as
A.D.’s nothing to a Jew.
It’s wholly up to me and you,
The numbers; what we write the score as.

Energy Crises
Corpses of bats have been found on windmills
at the power plant in Altamont Pass.
-- Oakland Tribune
Indifferent to, or unaware of harm,
Migrating bats dive bomb the windmill farm,
Against a non-polluting power source
A kamikaze strike to reinforce
Suspicion fossil fuels may be best.
Strip mine and drills belatedly contest
The loss of species with the newest trend
In solar heating, or--Midwestern blend-Methane from cows or ethanol from corn.
To seek the flame the lovelorn moth is born,
Meaning he may attack selenium
On rooftops. And will revenuers come
To fuel pumps as to a whisky still?
Dung beetles to exhaust pipes? Boding ill
For spotted owls and such, as well it should,
The obvious renewable is wood
(Of course you have to wait a hundred years)
As too is whale oil. Once the mounting fears,
Threats, economic ups and downs grow thick
It’s back to Ahab and to Moby Dick.
And do you, little bat upon the blade,
Further to make your point, bio-degrade?
Or as the trust fund cases hug the trees,
Hang in until the global warming-freeze? .

Down There on a Visit
Particle physics makes the angels on the heads of pins
Seem realistic. Saints themselves would blush to add up quarks.
The indivisible eludes us, and behind the spin
Of matter lies the paradox of Zeno, threatening
That motion is impossible. It is, or is at least
So circular as not to get us anywhere. How else
Account for the expanding and contracting universe,
Degrees of void, pre-Time, and limits of infinity?
Electron, proton, prion… thence to oxymoron, no?
At astronomic cost in grantsmanship and lobbying
Super colliders model, on a sub-atomic scale,
The pharaonic and improbably colliding worlds
Of Dr. Velikovsky, whom collision profited.
We have entrapped ourselves in bonds where all experiments
Are thought experiments. So too were Zeno’s, only his
Were frankly so. Forever motionless in its one space
Hangs--helpless to traverse in finite time its thought-out course
Of infinite divisions--physics’ arrow. Out of reach
The turtle, and Achilles still behind. The bang was big;
The crunch is coming; science squints. Hair-splitting cracks its lens.

Cruise Ship Buffet
Ice carvings seem to be confined to swans.
The certainty of melt too much distorts
A form too little fluid. Eagle, say,
Or upright Buddha. In a fountain’s jet
Neptune does not dissolve, nor will his guard
Of dolphins be reduced to bladder shapes.
Transparent dampened plastic can seem ice
If you want Triton in the lobster tails.
Into what form unrecognizable
Will time melt down the glaciers of our fjords?
Some names already do not quite apply.
The "Snowbird" is without one wing; the "Troll"
Might have been brought from Easter Island, scooped
Out nose and all. But then, a dying swan
Need not be ballerina. See it drip
Back into ugly duckling as the shrimp
Warm toward ptomaine. The cocktail parasols
Left over from last night bring Cio-Cio-San
Beside the sushi; hint that next year's cruise
Will be the old predictables: Cancun,
Aruba; will not warn the clientele
How, by its modeling of climate change,
Its little dioramas on the trays,
The late buffet rings in the midnight hour,
As Greenpeace hopes it's half a minute till.
After how many droplets dies a swan?

Cover Up
To have a brand or have a birthmark, which is worse?
A brand bespeaks the human, cruelly perverse,
But is a birthmark less so, being God-assigned?
Each in its way identifies, assists to find.
For thief, for slave, one’s fatal as the other. Flight
Cannot lose either. Plastic surgeons may set right
Or merely drive the blemish deeper in. In style
The branding iron is quick; a scalpel takes a while.
To smell flesh burn, to feel the chill of tissue-freeze…
Does either, given the seduction and the ease
Of self-deception much impact the deeper self,
Or do no more than prick its continental shelf?
Appearances are Rorschach blots of what we do.
The thief wears sleeves; marks rout imposters; we tattoo.

Absolute Pitch
It is genetic, obviously, as not all
Possess it.
Does it require our Western scales to find it out,
Express it?
Do Chinese have it? Do their pentatonic modes
Confuse it?
Does raising standard pitch above four-forty-two
Abuse it?
A puzzling heritage of some ancestral need
Now useless,
The sensitivity endures as might disease:
Deep, traceless,
Until new science spots it. Oboes sound their A,
As nearly
On the pitch as lip and reed and wood permit,
A merely
Brute approximation. In the ear itself,
In what is
Probably the only evidence--and that
Is gratis-Arguing in favor of platonic forms,
Exactly
Waits the abstract tuning fork, the pure ideal.
Correctly
Tempered intervals, meanwhile, a compromise,
But habit,
Serve. Such music as we need is not the spheres’
In orbit.
