We aren’t exactly All-For-Love-The-World-Well-Lost.
The merest inconvenience is enough of cost
To put us off: the ash tray out of place; the light
Left on or not left on; a less than honor bright
Bathtub; and-- in its way unmeaning’s quantum leap-The unknown name called out in sleep.
Ignore it, since you can. You cannot out of hand
Ignore upon your back a scratching wristwatch band.
Wind-up or digital, better a short scar here
Than time trochaic on a pillow by the ear.
Perhaps watch-pockets were, for Lee’s dropouts and Grant’s,
How bonding took. The Elgin came off with the pants.
Our own desertion cult may fission but not fuse.
Or is a touch cold fusion? It might warm with use,
But habit is itself accretion that prevents.
For turf-confirmed Old Hands, street Arabs folding tents
And stealing is a clear best case.. Who comes to stay
Misunderstands the desert. “Built on sand,” we say.
Just now we are a meaningful relationship;
Are Siamese identicals joined at the hip.
The mattress-ticking too is something like a pain.
I may get up und lass die Uhre alle steh’n.
I’ll not deny. I like the sleep together bit.
I’ll never be lifelong practitioner of it.
As once was said in what would be a gallows jest
If there had been a gallows, “Sleep on. Take thy rest.”
(Not said of Arabs, street or otherwise. One finds,
However, night is cushions, coffee, ash, flesh, minds.)
Another name, this time my own. A toss in-place;
Turn; ashen-scented fingers inches from my face.
In full moonlight--I have a good eye for details-The Crescent conquers in the half-moons of your nails.

Suspecting there were Belgian traitors signaling
To Germans on the other side of No Man’s Land,
And that the code was how they set their windmill sails,
The British turned artillery upon the mills.
Had they not heard of Don Quixote? Or did years
Of Boy Scout Manuals condition them to think
All arms are semaphores and any breeze a chance
To raise flag signals. But of course the winds do speak.
They say the gas attack will go as it was planned
Or turn on the attackers; say the millstones turn,
That is, that there is grain, that famine is not yet.
Lt. De La Mancha of the B.E.F.
Artillery, how rueful is your countenance
And what romance impelled you to the stalled assault
In which you are? The Boy Cadets at Waterloo?
Beware of any local vision you might make
Your Dulcinea. Mata Hari spied in French
But spoke in Dutch.
What is the speech of carillons?
Might not bell tones in sequence be another code?
Is that sufficient hint to bring in fire control?
To implement the “sweet bells jangled out of tune?”
The rain sweeps in from Ostend, and the ruined mills
No longer may betray, but they no longer pump.
Quixotic, that the foe you tilt at should be mud;
That belfries using wirelesses may speak en clair.

Into the steady hiss of the acetylene,
As if to look upon the Gorgon and survive,
The worker in his welder’s helmet leans and stares,
A cautious Perseus, although not unaware
That he can turn the gaseous Medusa off.
Less obvious than rivets, still, his seam will show.
Not at the weld, however, will the metal break,
Suggesting that its weaknesses go through and through,
As weakness of the flesh is said to, by the faint
Who praise the spirit, meaning that the tempting phrase
“Only connect” is of no use in bettering
Society, enough a tangled vipers’ nest
Already. Not to turn to stone one must be blind
Or in the mirror manage not to see the self,
While saving what there is to save, Andromeda
Or just the metal of her chains. Their links restored,
Pause, cut the flame, and lift the visor. Workman, face,
Eyes wide, the ash and smoke of action done: that too
A threat of stone, the Gorgon stare of one's art judged.

Inertly rusting in its well of fire-brick,
Covered, but itself a cistern dense
With the mosquitoes of the many years
Since it was fired, the moon gun breeds its wings
And draws its tourists--memory and quinine
Strong, ex-future passed to pestilence.
"Columbiad, the gun from which, on July
4th of 1866, was shot
Man's first projectile from the Earth to Moon.
'A fuse length for a man, and for his kind
The ages' dream. How long the leagues of light?'"
But for the plaque, and for the rays of scorch
Upon the level ground of oyster shell,
It might seem what it is, a wishing well,
A fountain rim mute in a quiet garden.
Man's wish of course continues: Cyrano's
Conceits: to climb a lodestone tossed in air;
To spiral upward on a waterspout,
Or clockwork lift rewound by compressed air.
Teleportations, missiles, chariots…
A Book of Revelation's open end.
Gun-cotton packs the barrel; fuel chills
The rocket gaskets; prophets, false or true,
Mount to the reins; the out-of-body soar.
Eternal target, targeted in lack
Of any evidence of human need
Or possibility of use, the Moon
Draws purposes as surely as the tides.
Aim has the double meaning of intent
And where one fires. In Space no windage is.
It's to intention that correction comes..

                    <text>Professional and Personal Papers
of
Prof. Charles Bennett Gullans
(including correspondence)

The period covered by this material is from 1947 until Dr. Gullans' death in 1993.
It covers his association with the "Stanford Poets" who began as students of Yvor
Winters, including Edgar Bowers, Thom Gunn, Helen Pinkerton Trimpi, Turner
Cassity, Kenneth Fields, Philip Levine, Janet Lewis Winters, and Winters himself.

There are program notes that as a very young man Dr. Gullans wrote for the
Minneapolis Symphony under the direction of Dmitri Mitropoulos. There are
working papers for Dr. Gullans' edition of the poems of Sir Robert Ayton
for the Scottish Text Society. as well as for his own poetic collections, including
unusually extensive mss. for earlier versions of these poems.
As author of Decorated Cloth in America: Publishers' Bindings 1840-1910
Dr. Gullans was perhaps the authority on decorative book bindings, and his
researches on these are included.
Of particular interest to the Woodruff Library will be, because of the Yeats
connection, the records of his pursuit of the writings and graphic designs
of T. Sturge Moore, as of the work of the artists Charles Ricketts (later president
of the Royal Academy) and Charles Shannon.
The records of Dr. Gullans own Symposium Press, devoted to luxury printing,
are present.
The most extensive correspondence, uninterrupted for thirty years, is with
Turner Cassity, whose letters from Dr. Gullans will be given to Emory.
There are diaries from trips abroad, appointment calendars, and eleborate
"meditations."

The intervening decades drop away
And I and you are young. But are young where?
Youth has its venues; age is anywhere:
The clinic, supermarket, shopping mall.
In adolescence place was Hotel Row
Along the Gulf. The Mafia's discreet
Broadwater Beach; the local favorite
The Buena Vista: Budget Alamo,
Our base. Sunburn and rum drinks, roulette, slots.
Courtyards with artificial Spanish Moss.
Named hurricanes have altered all of that.
And from that smart, good-looking teen you were
Their wake has seen you turn to what is known,
For lack of better term, as "family man."
(Not that we'd have you any other way)
I? Let's just say I do not gather moss.
But as the ebbing tide leaves step by step
The seawall, and on Highway 90 cross
Unstoppably the drunk pedestrians,
It's once again May 1948
And what our local high school countenanced
Instead of colleges' Spring Break. The sea,
As has been said, is everywhere the sea.
A beach is sands' fee simple, and for me
Is time-specific. Always you that year.

‘Adventuress’ is, as a term, this side of ‘slut’,
If only just. A sexist term and nothing but.
‘Adventurer’ touts heroism, if a sort
Whose purposes, in light of later ends, fall short
Of what Correctness calls for. As of now no one
Might be adventurer unless with knife and gun
And armor of the ethnocentric. Doubt, good works,
Children disqualify. The old way had its perks:
A native servant; chance to strike it rich; wear, more
Convenience than symbol, what the White Hard Core
Wear: jodhpurs and a real pith helmet. Low-rise jeans
On Peace Corps hips define what anti-hero means.
Nor does one quite see Vassar’s Summer-In-Brazil
To-Count-Endangered-Insects grist for Marvel’s mill,
Or Hanoi Jane as Earhart. What screen type today
Would not appear ridiculous if forced to play
Above a score by Korngold? Astronauts are backed;
Adventure is the free-form, unsupported act
Outside group think, and envied by the orthodox
As the ability “to think outside the box.”
It asks, of the society that it excites,
Exemption. Heroes do not haggle for their rights,
Which are the summit set upon, the banner placed,
The tiger in the sights, enchantresses embraced.

But what was underneath? Chaldean orgy rooms?
The wreck of solar panels on the salt
At Bonneville is the success of RV gangs
Defending racing. Flat Sahara roofs
Might maximize the sun, but sandstorms dim it out.
As if to advertise Mercedes Benz
Abandoned wind turbines are great three-pointed stars;
Ads too for how perverse the Jet Stream is.
Go geothermal? Pompeii at Yellowstone?
Firewood and peat; and cattle dung, perhaps.
Atomic power; ethanol. All energy
Is tribute to how fond we are of sloth
Renew the leases, President Obama. Drill.

Depression sideshow looking every bit as old
As Tutankhamun, one of some three dozen souls
Who on their deathbed bragged of being John Wilkes Booth
Is on exhibit. There is evidence of fire,
But carnivals themselves burn not infrequently.
X-rays above the coffin show a broken leg,
Though nothing certifies those photographs are his.
If Dr. Mudd was guilty and let Booth escape,
What was the actor’s life existing on the lam?
A barker? Possibly this barker, summing up,
For who are willing to believe, a vivid life
Not quite his corpse’s: every man’s conspiracy.
II
Attended in suburban Buenos Aires by-No tyro--Isobel Peron, the glazed remains
Of Eva wait a restoration. Not of them,
Which from the first have been state of the art. Of Juan,
Who travels with the body as one might with spares,
Or trip insurance. Isobel, the former dance
And nightclub hostess, not yet grieving president,
Pulls out the rusted hairpins and replaces them;
Dusts off the jewel copies; vaselines the lips.
Pizarro in his crystal case in Lima fares
No better. It’s a Valley of the Fallen shrunk
To one: an Elba, truce, St. Helena to be.
III
He’s offered now at half the price, an honest pitch,
As only half of him is there. The endless queues
Outside the granite of the ziggurat have gone;
The Guard no longer changes at the hour. The State
In fact is withering away, although to what
No one is betting. Barnum, thou shouldst be alive
At this hour. Lease Evita, purchase Lenin, find
One more among the many Booths, and watch the world
Beat down your doors. Add in John Dillinger in part
And see Madame Tussaud herself turn in the grave.
How often has your fool, the every minute born,
An all time chance to see his wise ones mortified?.
