Capitalism seems to have a need
Each generation for that sacrifice
We always call Poor Little Rich Girl.
Abusive husbands and litigious aunts,
Quack diet doctors, mis-invested trusts,
Harsh flashbulbs of the paparazzi.
We feel conspicuous consumption safe
If Barbara or Gloria or who
Is suffering for our excesses.
Has socialism an equivalent?
Rich Little Poor Girl? No, since lotteries,
As Marx might warn, are to the masses
What seeded claims once were to Gold Rushees,
And, socialism being first a race
To head off fools from folly, outlawed.
That combination's irresistible,
Envy and chance, as Calvin knew. It's why
"Election" offers it both ways.

<text>But Will the Uniforms Be Pretty?
My colleague Mario Di Spezia,
Who is a former priest, is married now
To some fast food executive, the first
Of his three wives to have her own means.
But then, the other two were both ex-nuns.
Dr. Di Spezia is onto Peace,
Its heaviest millstone since Woodrow Wilson.
Twice, at meetings of the Faculty,
His wife has brought out mushroom canapés,
As warm reminders of Hiroshima;
And, too, he agitates at the grass roots
For funding of a "Peace Academy,"
To counter West Point and Annapolis.
His argument has logic on its side,
But boggles the imagination. What,
One wonders, would the team sports be? Dove trapping?
Plowshare races? Would the graduate
March-by outdo for sheer clubfootedness
That of U.S. Olympic teams? One fears
Whatever mode its architecture is,
The campus in good time will look to be
Geneva's staid Palais des Nations-Unfinished, out of style, despised, bankrupt.
And though it uniform its mild cadets
In dhotis, or in gleaming silver-blue
Appropriate to sexist baby boys
Or Wagner's Lohengrin, these aged eyes
Will see it all too soon as olive drab
Of any other war. And they who march
Expertly or who stumble on club feet
To prop authority or bring it down
Become in that eyesight as Legionnaires
Of Bingo, mercenary as the rest:
Another brand of cannon fodder, new,
Improved. And cemeteries, as we know,
Are full of types who had the right of way.

Well under thirty.
Middle age stays out

The Common Era
Dates from B.C. 4.
Exchange rates on the lira
Were not mad as that. So John
May well have bettered
Salome upon
The point of youth. And, fettered,
Emaciated, he was quite
In such position
As to jilt her, sight
Unseen, of whom the vision-If cisterns had, like tunnels, ends
Of daylight, promise-Would be bright. Time lends
Dark veils to seven famous,
Touts the head, the body mocks.
Upon the platter,
Halo, bloodied locks,
Not viscera, most matter.

As he approaches eighty, Turner Cassity may finally be out of control.
His hatchet has never fallen more lethally, meaning if you have the stomach
for him he is more enjoyable than ever. Under the blade come Martha Graham,
Johann Sebastian Bach, musicologists, tree huggers, Frank Gehry, Folk Music,
Folk Art of all times and all places, Folk…However, there are his unpredictable
sympathies: Edith Wilson, skyscrapers, Pontius Pilate, Pilate's legionnaires.
He obviously has a soft spot for Pop Culture, although he cannot avoid seeing
it de haut en bas. As usual, he is all over the place geographically. One feels
he would slash his wrists before he would write a poem about any city on the
traditional Grand Tour. Manaus, Campeche, Trieste, Budapest (as destroyed
by Godzilla), these are his places. He has a disturbing willingness to write
on two sides of an issue, resembling in this Bernard Shaw. You have to read
very carefully to see whether he tips his hand. One looks forward to Mr. Cassity's
posthumous poems, when he is beyond the reach of libel.

If role reversal shows sex acts the same,
How know who is the moth and who the flame?
Spaced F-16s collide; no skill can bar it.

The Cajuns at the poker table, drunk
Or novice, change expression guilelessly
According to the nature of their hands.
At roulette clueless equally, in spite
Of having French--Louisiana French-Betting consistently against themselves
They strain the poker face of croupiers.
"Perhaps they're color blind," mutters a guard,
As it becomes apparent rouge et noir
Elude them, although faites vos jeux brings down
An avalanche of chips. The slot machines
Do not attract. The offshore drilling rigs
Install them in their recreation rooms,
Along with candy vending, hard core porn,
And, without comment, contraceptive packs.
The slots in any case are held just now
By tour-busloads of widows, sod or grass,
Sod obvious by added pounds, and grass
By nips and tucks. To sound of shaken coins,
Automata to much the same extent
As are the bandits, they depress the arms
To further sounds of baubles, bangles, beads.
It's midnight New Year's Eve; the time ball drops;
None but the Old Year cashes out. Not Hope,
Not Chance, not Venus Avaricia,
Goddess of Alimony. Royal Flush,
Or 35-to-1, or cherries up
By threes to pour the jackpot in the cup.
So near Evangeline and all of that,
So far from Guy Lombardo, Zydeco
Assures les vieux temps here are not forgot.
The true payoff, the food court, dishes out
Ham hock and blackeyed peas, and one more year.
Debt, helicopters wait; at sea the rigs,
At home the diet and the daytime soaps.
A bus is loading. Next stop Laughlin? Vegas?

Isosceles or scalene, equilateral,
Obtuse… Believers are not absolutely sure
It even has three sides, or which isle centers it.
No matter. It can quickly be conformed to suit
Whatever nth dimension is required for ships,
Lost charter flights, downed UFOs, Red sub mishaps.
The failure? Not to see that loss is circular.
The missing yacht from Nassau still is overdue;
The ghostly charter tracks the compass needle still;
Is there some reason Roswell should monopolize?
Forever scraping on the reef the Diesel Rus.
The ultimate triangle, love, is too the wreck;
Is lack of theory; our point of no return;
The ever shifting center we ignore; the myth.
