                    <text>Before Elvis
Idolatry of Bernadette of Lourdes
Has from the earliest somewhat obscured
The fact her mother would have none of it.
"She's lying," said Madame, "or had a fit.
She's always lying. Anything to miss
Out housework. She's what adolescence is:
Deceitful." This from peasantry's complete
Believer in the Church's balance sheet,.
Exponent of the profits shrines bring in.
"And lesson on how sloth becomes a sin.
I'd see the Virgin in dark corners too
Unless I swept them. So no doubt would you.
Is any lame and syphilitic brute
Some miracle if fitted with a boot?"
Nor on her deathbed did Madame reverse
Her early disbelief. "A spa but worse.
We have grown rich replacing crutches left
Behind in over-optimism." Cleft
Of palate, club of foot, the self-deceived
Are always those the easiest relieved
Of savings, if not ignorance and pain.
The pensions, if not the Grotto, gain.
At Fatima the sun divides and wheels;
Its prophecies the Vatican conceals
Until the children who ape Bernadette
Are middle aged and mute, or, better yet,
Their mother dead. Quebec's spin-off Ste. Anne
De Beaupre does all that a copy can
To profit and to heal, although amid
Increasing cynicism. Fatamid
Spectaculars are what it really needs,
Not blindness cured by candles, itch by beads.
Converting dirt to pay dirt, slums to sites
For pilgrimage, Calcutta quickly spites
Mumbai by letting paupered nuns erect
For filming handsome shrines of their small sect
Of the beatified Teresa. Rome,
France, Bollywood, can any good thing come
From ordinary adolescent guile?
Shops, souvenirs, the thriving tourist mile.

Tonguing the brushes as they line a phosphorescent paint
Upon the dials that are piece work of their day,
The girls who presently will harbor cancer in the jaw
And die of it, in more than one sense Time destroys.
In most of us a radium does not accumulate.
The numerals, however, do. They sum to what,
Subtracted by its twin the midnight hour, is nought indeed:
Zero of a departed beat, a darkened face.
As radium decays it goes to half life, interim
Which we are not permitted. Half life is for us
The half we call a coma. Greenish numerals that light
Insomnia, the hands that track it, are, dispersed
In time, the ghosts of those who painted them, or at the least
Their fit memorials--of application, tongue,
And talent, faint but glowing, form: the minute’s trace prolonged
Beyond the minute, time-specific and yet more.

These are the years for mending what can still be mended.
Too many breaks already are not healed but ended.
As, when the equation’s other half is gone
There can be no solution, and the one on one
That was the balance is a tipping of the scale
Toward being found forever wanting, horseshoe nail
Of battles lost, the gallows trapdoor sprung,
The weight of doom. I dangle on a too sharp tongue
And too precise. The dust of gold, the empty pan,
The younger self strung up now tell me what they can:
Be civil to your former lovers, Kindly Poet.
If they have botched their lives there is no sign they know it.
If you have parlayed yours into a sort of Gounod
Kermesse you have paid a price. That much they do know.
But who’s to say Mephisto’s not seducible-Where but on his own ground?--or that the crucible
All our bargains, not just this, return us to
Is not congenial, or at least will do.
Having required more of our time, and shaped our ends,
Old enemies may mean more now than do old friends,
As if a bony finger, pressing down behind us,
Distorted values on the scales that so remind us.

Is not the operative word façade?

Affords to climbers a domestic folly.
Whitney, in the lower forty-eight,
Exists primarily to calibrate
Death Valley as the opposite extreme,
As does the Matterhorn exist to seem
Plato’s idea of a mountain. Yes,
Olympus rears, but it’s too much a mess:
No profile. Aconcagua, on the line
Dividing Chile from the Argentine,
As an example must be disallowed.
It is eternally obscured in cloud,
Unlike that playing to the gallery
Displayed in death by George Leigh Mallory.
The concept of Achttausender, outside
A metric system, does not so divide
Peaks thought to be worth climbing from the not.
Our Scripture mountains, Sinai, Ararat,
Exceed in myth a documented myth,
That matchless Mallory-without-or with
Un-There, the highest mountain wannabe,
The Fly Boys’ Burma barroom fantasy,
Their World War II non-urban urban legend,
A thirty thousand foot Mount Amne Machen,
An ultimate one-upping, to prevail
Henceforth as mountaineering’s Holy Grail,
And how Hump-flying prairie pilots got their lick
At Magic Mountains which find any flat land hick.

“They come down silently. You cannot hear them.
Choppers sound like Maytags in the sky.”
The Medic shrugs. “He’s talking aliens.
All this ward is. Pink elephants are out.”
“Before Viet Nam, the VA doctor says,
“If dipsos fantasized it was fire ants
And killer bees. I daresay Desert Storm
Will bring out scorpions. How violent
Is this one?”
“Only when he grabs the phone
And tries to get through to the Pentagon.”
“They can’t take off straight up. They almost can.
Don’t need a runway. Just a running start.
If we had used them in the countryside
We could have spooked the Cong. They track by sound.”
“A sedative cannot do any harm.
He’s too far gone. I rather like the thought
Of aliens abducting Uncle Ho.
I’ve always thought a little poison gas
In all those tunnels would have turned the tide.”
“Now this one,” says the Medic, “is a trip.
He thinks he’s Charles Lindbergh held prisoner
By FDR and Wall Street Jews.”
“Well, war
Has its objectors.”
“Not space aliens.
He’s talking autogiros. As I said
To Hermann Goering, don’t expect too much
Of those Sikorsky helicopters. They
Do well to get six feet above the ground.”

The Doctor leaves the Hepatitis-cumCirrhosis ward as one might flee an eighth
In Planet of the Apes series. He blinks.
"The ticking time lag of the middle-aged.
It's in technology it shows up first.
I even recognize it in myself.
If I think 'plane' it's prop job DC3
And radio is Philco. When Iraq
Kicks in it's bound to be the first night-lens
Remembered from Kuwait; the first smart bombs."
With some amusement he acknowledges
He bought the paperweight upon his desk
In the belief it was a toy V-2
To find it was a Saturn replica.
And as from outer space his own wisecrack
About the use of poison gas comes back.
"Perhaps," he thinks, "a superseded tech
Is how to win a war. Radar did not

Pick up those fire balloons the Japanese
Sent over California; Brush fires
May well be arson by the Taliban.
Sonar cannot detect a sailing ship.
Was it a rowboat that did in the Cole?
An M-1 never jams. The M-16...
Being expendable, the older ships
Could have succeeded at Gallipoli.
Has the Atomic Bomb been superseded
By the Hydrogen? Don't go there."

Five legs and human head,
Luckily not alive:
The only quintiped.
Not symbol, legs not five
(Insects incline to six)
A queen bee sites the hive:
Her sexless workers’ sex,
A flying Nineveh.
The excavators’ picks
Evoke Iraq’s “Oi! Weh!”
That British haul took out
Their patrimony, eh?
Incestuous as Lot,
Diverse gene pool of one,
Variety and not,
Food for the proverb-prone,
A swarm dwells in a skull.
Skull of a lion. Stone
Inoculates the bull.
The bull has wings, not flight;
Sexist in her rule,
The queen has eggs, not might.
And are they vengeance, these?
Islamic acts of spite
Of former colonies?
Attacks of killer bees?
A Bull’s mad cow disease?
