What kind of bell would one design today
To sound the dread "Unclean!' of leprosy?
A matron's ordinary dinner bell,
There being now no servants to confuse?
Bright harness bells alert to any twitch?
A little replica of the immense
Tzar Kolokol outside the Kremlin wall,
As if to warn pandemics threaten? AIDS
Mutated, maybe; spore of some typhoid
From drag queen Mary; airborne syphilis,
Or fatal acne. Carville, Molokai…
Resurgent in the place names' sounding bronze
From land to sea the sunken bell of myth
Re-activates its clapper. On our doors
The Xs, death in any bell that tolls.

                    <text>As the Turk Turns
All crusades are the Children's in a sense:
Well meaning, uninformed, ill planned, intense.
Nothing but second childhood can explain
Ford's Ship of Peace, or Wilson's trek by train
Toward apoplexy. Activists who tout
Their diets are the inner child come out.
The medieval counterparts en route
To Palestine first were the captured loot
Of Turkish pirates, and thereafter slaves.
And can we say a Jolly Roger waves
Today above the waiting chains of cults,
Street gangs, addiction, to the end results
Of which the adolescent odalisque
And neutered harem guardian might speak.
"Jerusalem was freed, but not by us.
Mantras do not accomplish; fighting does."
Assassin is derived from hashish; blame
The victim, not the drug and not the name.
More and more abstract are the crusades "pride"
Mounts: gender-neutral ads, promotion tied
To quotas, pressures same-sex unions mate
Their fragile lifeboat with the ship of state.
The unattainable is still pursued;
The unenforceable is still renewed.
In fairness to the Turks we have to say
It's piracies, not fetishes that pay..

Say if I cannot see it's not the liquor,

Frank Gehry cityscapes, an out of scale
Metallic origami for such patrons
As push for calling café hired help "waitrons"
And can accept museums by the ton
That look created by a pastry gun.
If in this world of Dr. Caligari
One is unwillingly upon safari,
He learns to love the square, right angle, plane.
It may be Euclid lived and died in vain,
But so did Gaudi, and those cast iron flora
On balustrades went out with Isadora.
Astigmatism in the eye can be,
Somewhat, corrected. If the street we see
In fact is gross distortion, then soft contacts
Cannot tell buildings from the Adirondacks.
And if perspective stretches, is it not
That palaces in Venice lean a lot?
Perhaps a war might blow walls into plumb,
Neutrons correct my vision. Fall, sweet bomb.

The final pontiff has been laid to rest,
And none will venerate him. Neither schism,
War, nor atheism, and let alone
Intolerance, could bring about the close
Of twenty centuries of tack and trim.
It was diversity. The Curia
Could not adjust to thought of Peter’s throne
As Babel speaking ex cathedra, nor,
Rotated continent to continent
For relevance, could very long survive
The Papacy itself. Its Vatican
Sold off to meet the lawsuits, Montreal
As heir of the receivership, the Church
Of England co-opts the theology,
Or such of it as still can be determined.
Websites, or some few, will guide the old
To bones of saints and True Cross jigsaw bits
In virtual reality. So long
The one mandate of Heaven if the first
Among bureaucracies, the universal
Was at last fragmented by locale.
A province is the wedge of heresy.
Total depravity and ex-Elect,
Predestined as if Calvin willed, Rome ends.

Whatever future was the pledge,
Dissatisfaction has the edge.
Not that the grass is elsewhere greener,
But that both it and ours grow meaner.
The hay made while the sun shines sours;
One can improve his shining hours,
Not lengthen. Does to have and flaunt not
Mock the poor man’s waste not, want not,
Or does it parallel it? Greed
As demonstration of the need,
Unanswerable and unafforded,
To hoard what cannot now be hoarded:
The decades wasting of themselves.
A cliff erodes; an ice floe shelves;
Our future is a sum that dwindles,
Memory bank a bank that swindles.
One way or other, time subtracts.
Life is a minus sign that acts.

Outside Manaus, not to disappoint the tours,
A number of the locals have obligingly
Gone native, hunter-gatherers in those locales
Not being numerous before the rubber boom
Annihilated all of them. The derelicts
In urban jungles stateside lack so safe a choice.
Feathers and piercings, body paint on them would seem
Survivals of the 60s, and increase dislike
Which they incur, already great. Earrings are threats?
A naked savage is a homeless person, nude?
Curare is a savage’s designer drug,
His head shop all too unequivocally that,
And any medicine of his, Alternative.
Head hunter, herbalist, ex-hippie growing old,
Have you as tourist trap, asylum, dead end street
A jungle placable as this? All of your past
Tamed? Going native in its time was not PC.
It was admitting failure, just as, now, it’s seen
As saving wildlife with a nose flute. Music puts
Also its spin on histories of peonage
In rubber gathering, an expiation based
On the offending firms’ elitist theory
Goodyear will always be what makes the world go round,
And no town with an opera house can be all bad.

The tripod and the boom may presuppose

You will not find on any Hamburg dockside
So true a gene for virtual peroxide.
The eyes aren’t pink, thanks to the contact lenses.
Who go down lists are going into frenzies.
An item for collectors, unaware
His stock in trade is that Jean Harlow hair:
His platinum American Express card,
His entrée, price tag, and his Porno Press Card.
He’ll be picked up and passed from hand to hand
By bathhouse patrons jaded with the tanned.
And if the contacts go into their case
A blood transparent stares out of his face-The vision’s red, unseeing underside
That, blind to its own presence, cannot pride
Itself on white eyelashes, see-through iris
(Which some will comment on in private diaries,
As well as on the fadeout farther south).
Nine days a wonder, then it’s hand to mouth,
Made grimmer by a tale that got about
How, breathing hard, he popped his contacts out.
New items move fortnightly up the list;
Who has no contacts now, will not be missed.
