1987
The 747 fishtails endlessly
Across the Trade Winds; in the smoking section, numb
With sideswipe, after thirteen hours we all agree
Namibia itself will seem a condolence.
“Ontbyt?” the steward says. And as the sun comes up,
The Namib, in the colors of a flattened pearl,
Sorts out its fogs and dunes. The iridescent flats
Give way to golden morning on the Kalahari;
Fawn, the River Vaal appears. Then, neither white
Nor watered--center, not an edge--the all concrete
Witwatersrand. Below the left wing as we bank,
Enormous in its greedy sprawl, Johannesburg
Maps out the diggings of its gold. If on the ground
One still can be deceived, the townships from the air
Are too encompassing. But does Soweto fly?
Jan Smuts is any airport. Customs are not worse
Than elsewhere, nor security. The block of flats
I used to live in is a rainbow co-op, now
Legit? And at the entrance, somewhat heavier,
And with a broader range of huge cut flowers to sell,
The Tamil woman in her sari still is there.
I notice, as she gathers up the last unsold,
A new Mercedes Diesel comes to pick her up.

As ceremonial as Roman rostral columns,
Trieste’s two high flagpoles front the empty sea,
The city’s abstract fleur-de-lis their latest crest,
A dark, heroic statuary as their base.
It is as if the Iwo Jima photograph
Had in a retroactive time warp straightened up
To be the 20s Fascist model. In the haze
That lifts the shining Adriatic out of time,
Makes it one surface with the spaces facing it,
One era with republics, communes gone before,
As plausible as empty shipping palaces,
Their architecture of Vienna-by-the Sea,
There might arrive that skiff from Island of the Dead,
An unmanned Flying Dutchman of the stormless Gulf,
Or second Raft of the Medusa, skeletons
On board as well as sprawling Second Empire nudes;
As in a bloodied operetta uniform
Franz Ferdinand was ferried north, as once
An Emperor of Mexico was floated home.
Tourism shows decline can be an industry
Like any other. Venice does not live on glass,
Vienna on the OPEC meetings. So Triest
Continues as Trieste, having just escaped
Becoming Trst. Outliving Yugoslavia,
Its lost “side door to Europe” waits the open door.

A Failure as a mosque--it does not point
Toward Mecca even sort of… Ataturk
Was right: the building’s most effective use
Would be as a casino. Is its dome
Not like a great roulette wheel upside down?
The decades of the Orient Express
Would have espoused it; have had minarets
In lighting vivid as the Vegas Strip,
As those in Cairo at this moment are.
The round quotations from the Koran, lamps,
Uneven floors (a loose flagstone is luck,
As Proust‘s Marcel found out) combine to shill.
Mosaic Theodora, beaded bag
Swung at the ready, is prepared to bet.
The temple of Justinian indeed
Surpasses: it drives money changers in.
It is itself surpassed, and not alone
In reference to rigor, by the mosques
Of the Magnificent, whose architect,
Siana, was not a man to take a chance.
He was a military engineer,
And no designs of his say Monaco.
If they were used as powder magazines
No enemy bombardment could reduce
Them to a Parthenon, no Elgin seize
Their graven images that are not there.
They are the indestructible outcome
Of strict Islam de-Hellenizing pi:
The circle and the square made algebra.
On red horizons, as our planets rise,
And as on launching pads wait minarets,
True mosques are planets nearer--partial globes,
Among the standing rockets that have brought them close.

Archaic torsos of Apollo do not move me;
Neither do the marbles of Praxiteles.
Given their reputations, it must then behoove me
To draw up my denunciations. They are these:
The torsos' missing head is Queen Victoria-The arching nose and Hanoverian popeyes;
And classic statues would excite euphoria
In West Coast agencies whose models advertise
Weight training methods. I prefer Laocoon,
A Greek Goliath either of whose agile sons
Is more a David than that muscle- bound dragoon
In Florence (Lover? One night stand stood more than once?)
Lord Elgin, Rilke, Buonarotti, come up front
And have your prizes. You, Milord, have for your taste
In hauling off to London so much kitsch, the brunt
Of irredentists, though by right you should be graced
With honors, as a profile of Our Gracious Queen
Should go to Rilke. Michelangelo… Well, slings
And arrows he professed to have; slings must have been
Acceptable, a needful prop the subject brings.
In Sicily the temples have not put up friezes,
Meaning they look less a Doric comic strip.
Forbidden likeness, Moorish Art abstracts, and pleases,
Adding nothing on bare form. The Greeks equip.

St. Isaac’s in a photograph looks less
An Orthodox cathedral than a source
For most American state capitols:
The dome set on a colonnaded drum,
A pedimented portico. In fact,
Four pedimented porticos--East, North,
West, South--and columns not Carrara white
But opulent red granite. Not a touch
Taxpayers in the U.S. would approve,
Nor could they be consistently at ease
In presence of the giant church itself
And not the photo. Siege and weathering,
Neglect and riots, as the heavy mist
Condenses on the Neva and is space;
Is background, foreground (if you like, space-time)
Distort Democracy’s platonic form,
As if in Little Rock a late unrest
Had left its craters in the Statehouse steps,
Or insurrection pitted Charles McKim’s
Rhode Island masterpiece. As in a sleep
Of Reason monstrously go by the wrecks:
New Hampshire gutted; Texas looking like
The Reichstag at the end of World War II;
Wisconsin razed for landfills in its lake;
Utah a vacant Zion on its hill.
If Baton Rouge and Lincoln skyscrape still,
Nebraska Deco, Long Regime and Speer,
Is it because Democracy has shrunk?
A legislature unicameral;
One man, one vote, and that the governor’s?
Or is it that dictatorship rehearsed
Outlasts its fall and is alternative?

The puppet master being nearly eighty,
Uncertainty bedevils his appearance.
On time, however, rubicund and gouty,
He takes the stage. The drama he is steering
Is Ariosto. He does all the voices:
Angelica, Orlando, Carlo Magno.
With Paladins and Saracens the choices,
A violinist, hammering col legno,
Accompanies the fights. A spring and trigger
Let fly spectacular broadsword beheadings.
Not figures jiggling on their strings whose rigger
Operates them from above, whose threading
Always are on the verge of fatal tangling,
Stick puppets make their puppeteers their charges;
They are their alter egos. Each is angling
To have some last advantage. Flesh that ages
But that commands, and wood forever youthful,
Though ordered back into its casket nightly.
It is the curtain call that’s wholly truthful;
The old man limps; his puppet’s dancing sprightly.

Because of iron in the cargoes and in the rocks on shore,
Compasses in the ore boats were undependable.
Duluth, Missabe, and Northern R.R.

Enormous trestles to the ore docks have a look
Of some arrangement made to onload Noah’s Ark;
Evacuate the planet onto spacecraft. SCurve ramps, an easy grade to nowhere, in the lake
Of Hiawatha they are shape of things to come.
Itself magnetic north, itself its funeral,
Some lodestone boat moves out to locks and fire: St. Lawrence,
Open sea. Smokestack America is one
With Tyre and Nineveh and with the small wigwam
Beside the shining Big-Sea Water. If you say
To mountains “Be ye moved,” yes, they will come to you,
If they are iron and you are Rockefeller. For
Mohammed it’s a different scenario:
Ships of the desert in a portage of the self.
And, as is known to any schoolchild, Arab dhows
Sailed into Hudson Bay and left Islamic runes
Upon a Minnesota Kaaba. Ark, kayak,
Or rescue rocket loading by the high steel truss,
Whomever they must leave behind, even as we,
Partake of Vinland. If the myth is, it was good,
Then why was it abandoned? Let our rune stone say,
But let the tale be flattering. Omit Japan.

Recessive in its reach of guarding waters,
Stockholm prospers in self-serving peace.
If it has guilts, its surging suicides
May not exclusively from them derive.
There are the winters, tax indexing, Strindberg.
Neutral through two wars, though not, perhaps,
So neutral as all that--as corridor
For German troop trains Sweden profited,
Its biases discreetly processed now
Through Nobel prizes (as in dynamite
The nitroglycerin is buffered). Proud,
Not to say arrogant, this city might
Be built to lord it over Finns and Danes.
A bit of plush and grandeur, as to say
Uncluttered “good design” is very well,
But even Viking ships had ornaments
Upon the prow, and Barcelona chairs
Are stark rebukes to early Swedish kinds.
Nor is this yet the Kingdom Peaceable.
In tunnels blasted in the granite cliffs
(We thank you once again, Mein Herr Nobel)
Are bases for a fleet of submarines
Still in commission, and the ferries go
How many times a day? Outside the reach
Of liquor laws. A Carrie Nation nation,
Yes, and Lizzie Borden dairy farm.
How many of those suicides do you think are?

In Abyssinia the Ark
(Not Noah’s; of the Covenant)
Has been assigned a guardian.
The Ark is at Axum, brought there
By partisans of Sheba. Blind-Although not stricken blind; just old-That guardian cannot describe
The tablets, or, indeed, be sure
If they are there. The guarded church
(No, not a tabernacle), chaste
And square, is carved of living rock.
A Coptic mockery of Jews,
Its dust and distance, negritude,
Do not attract the Blood Savoy
As did the Turin Shroud. Upkeep,
However, Addis Ababa
(Which did attract the Royal House)
From time to time contributes to.
Dividing sea forever closed
And pharaonic threat dispersed,
The pillars twain, the cloud by day,
The fire by night, go on no more,
Think not that from this wilderness
An Ark or people can be led.
Defining texts, on stone, on gold,
As Judah’s place is by the Lion,
Wherever honored, have their site.
Once who is guardian is gone,
The lightnings and the vengeance mute,
Bright seraphim untrumpeted,
Commandments unrevealed by Braille
And crystal lenses nowhere kept,
If we draw near the vessel lost
How can we sense that we profane?
Sinai, Salt Lake, is this the place?
