Worlds and Underworlds
Eden was a garden; Heaven is a city.
Hell… We are not told, and more the pity.
Dante was entirely on his own.
A frozen lake? The fire is lately gone?
Or is it? Global warming is as much a threat,
Greenpeace informs us, as a new onset
Of glaciation, or the sea’s receding,
Rising. Which, depends upon your reading.
Seven Circles, Seven Seas, Inferno sounded,
Sin prioritized. We are confounded
By the felt dictate that punishment
Should fit the crime, and since the force, extent
Of crime is boundless, Hell, if it’s a cave, must span
A poet’s caverns measureless to man;
And if a city like its rival, be well gated;
Have its guards at one-way gates twice guarded.
Escape is any bribe or any proposition.
Guards below have no more inhibition
Than our own, or would not be in Hell.
Far better here than bound upon the Wheel
Revolving toward Nirvana. Is it really worth it,
All that incarnation? To rebirth it
Painfully until we free the soul,
Each death, meanwhile, no more than brief parole?

Waiting for a Durbar
The Voortrekker Monument
If what we call the Cullinan,
The world’s immensest diamond,
Is by the nature of its form,
Its crystal structure, only part
Of some still larger diamond
As yet unfound, have we some cause,
At this late date, to search it out?
Discretion is today the gem
Of dynasties, whose mistresses
Are not what once they were. What is
What once it was, Pretoria,
However grim the deficit,
Would never waive the export ban.
Create therefore a crown to wait?
For all those Indian Army colonels
Beached in Pietermaritzburg,
Of their Dominion Capricorn
Some final Crown Imperial?
The Rajah Kruger heads them off.
Captive across the passes, held
Beneath the granite oculus,
Voortrekker Heights’ echoing dome,
As in a Boere baldachin,
Eight thousand carats catch the sun:
On tripod of the Rand’s own gold,
Unfueled, white, eternal flame-The mandate of the Volk expressed;
Long epic shrunken to a stone.
The empty setting in Natal,
The arches and the cross of pearl,
Make mockery of House and Mace
As patently as of a Crown.
Back to an earth contested long
Let drop the carbon: part and part
One jewel, out of light in dark;
Out, out of envy, in a clay
No fire comes to a second time,
Though every dominion burn.
The great volcanic throat, the mine
Which it encloses, contradict.
Their sky is red; their clay is blue.

Uncle Wrigley
Racism being very out,
Tar-Baby must be turned about.
Equivalent in years to come,
Some sticky trap of bubble gum:
Expanding, pink. As sunburns show,
The White Man is not really so.
But just as asphalt if it’s slapped
Exacts revenge, a bubble shaped
Offends the face if it is pricked.
Wounds may exist just to be licked.
And in the licking comes the thought
That tar will burn and air will not.
Hephaestus, Remus ,chicle, tar.
That is the way that matters are.
To strike the flint and huff and puff,
Or call a truce and say enough?

The tuning fork, resistant to the torque
Of those who would uproot it, by such nature

God's Big Game Day. It sounds its massive A
As soundless visual, and any dunce
Can see the tone deaf Yuppie crowd's impatience
To get back to the parking lot first out.
Do roofs and domes--The Astro- Thunder- Super- -Betray the cult of Rockne and the Grouper
(Gipper?) and the locker room cursed out
At halftime in a phony Irish brogue
That was the cult's whitewashing in advance
Of priests molesting and of Church finance,
And jocks who can, like elephants, be rogue?

Of the poems I like “On the Playground” best. The snowball is fully realized.; the soot
removes it instantly from Robert Frost country. I can never keep it straight which
is Bierstadt and which is Thomas Moran, although I like both. A couple of Bierstadts-or Morans--are in the Timkin Museum in San Diego. The landscape is Yosemite, in a
golden light I never saw there, but tourist posters must be allowed license. In the poem
“purple marbled meat” is so startling it should perhaps come toward the end, so as not
to make what follows anti-climactic. In what sense ‘fare’ in cloud-fare? Croquet and
Oakland Cemetery seem to me so much of the same period I would make more of the
game and less of the other details. Wickets as “little headstones of air” is wonderful,
although perhaps too ingenious for most readers. In Noah’s flood I would replace
or omit the fencepost, as too un-Middle Eastern. If you are going to include a parrot
I think you should also include the dove. One might work up and interesting contrast.
This afternoon I am off to see the new Bruce Willis movie, “Sin City”, said to be
based on a graphic novel, I.e. comic book, produced, I.e. the comic book, as a tribute
to film noir. Talk about aesthetic distance…

Adds on swagger in the broadest way.
A creature wholly of your civvies,
A Board Room portrait very early traced,
If war’s Last Judgment ever divvies
Models up, you may be poorly placed,
But have this expiation: finished
Poems make for Lieder that are bad.
A music rescues the diminished.
There must be something for the notes to add.

Running the Gauntlet
On Polk Street at its straighter other end,
Beggars keep bankers’ hours. The poor you have with you
Always, if only after ten. I condescend
In my way. Errands that I have to do…
I try to do them early. Do I need
Calcutta on my way to Walgreen’s? To this stretch
Of curb the dying drunk will come; and on that bleed
The young self-perforated. All will retch.
Early to bed and surly (sic) to rise
Is not the route that made me wealthy; tell me whom
Health ever made unsanctimonious, if wise.
Such will, though, in a world of little room
Create a space. The pristine morning drips;
Its dregs have yet to surface. Pray do not suppose
This poem is some condemnation on my lips.
It’s my safe conduct, so far as it goes.
