Top down, heat on in the absurd blue chill
That is the world’s desire, the heure exquise
Of California, we head for hours
Of “Frisco.” How to set its teeth on edge:
Only the polyestered call it that.
You have been punctual, as always. Not
To keep me waiting you delay your nails.
For some time now you’ve kept a buffer, file,
And choice of colors in my glove compartment.
Out the brush comes as I pick up speed.
It’s Bayshore Freeway in its wildest days
As “Bloody Bayshore,”and in fact, ahead,
There is a six-car smash. I, in a show
Of male bravado--what the Fifties had
For their machismo--pointedly and proud
Do not slow down. The crews have brought in jacks,
And crowbars; “jaws of life” are decades on,
As too are body bags. Some bodies freed,
One sees, were servicemen--Air Force, Marines.
More uniforms: carhops or majorettes,
All quickly far behind, among the lights
Of gawkers and the Redwood City finest.
I am twenty-two and you nineteen.
Your hand is steady and the lacquer smooth.

To have a brand or have a birthmark, which is worse?
A brand bespeaks the human, cruelly perverse,
But is a birthmark less so, being God-assigned?
Each in its way identifies, assists to find.
For thief, for slave, one’s fatal as the other. Flight
Cannot lose either. Plastic surgeons may set right
Or merely drive the blemish deeper in. In style
The branding iron is quick; a scalpel takes a while.
To smell flesh burn, to feel the chill of tissue-freeze…
Does either, given the seduction and the ease
Of self-deception much impact the deeper self,
Or do no more than prick its continental shelf?
Appearances are Rorschach blots of what we do.
The thief wears sleeves; marks rout imposters; we tattoo.

In every dancer is a spastic trying to get out,
And getting out. The Martha Graham repertory brings,
Unseen as such, St. Vitus’s life story twitch for twitch.
Outside the Rose Adagio, the classic ballet seems
The reject of a dervish or a clean-and-jerk in tights.
A dance is footwork or is nothing, as the tango knows,
And hoofing. Get real, Martha. Ancient Greeks in brilliantine
Or Appalachians in taps each mock the origin.
To sound the forty whacks that shook Fall River hire Rockettes.

Death is a sort of Schlieffen Plan.
It pivots on the young and sweeps the outer edges,
Who are we. Outside the span
Of threescore years and ten, do not its stages
Coerce us ever toward the Styx?
How could you, Count, on campaign maps have failed to see
You drew a sickle, with its fix
Increasingly on reapings grimly sure to be?
And though some few of us become
Tight pockets of resistance, we are not the Marne.
The juggernaut rolls on, a Somme
That never ends, or ends in that putrescent tarn
Senescence is and Flanders was: the Pit, the Poe,
The Pendulum whose fatal pace
Not either discipline or mutiny can slow,
And Time creates of any space.

You’d be the one with all the luck. In case
Not much rubs off, well, it was fun to rub.”
And I Diogenes crawl in my tub
Before the honest envy of the born to lose
In presence of the uses of the born to use..
Of late I am grown beery-honest too.
In thirty years I have not thought of you,
And least of all in those December days
On board my troopship, in a tropic haze.
No doubt in the assignment you were in
The haze of luck you had from me wore thin.
If you were killed, and mostly you born losers are,
It was in snow. If not, you’ve found a wrinkle bar.
I still spend New Year’s in the sun. My luck has held.
The islands where I soldiered see me now well-heeled.
I even play roulette sometime. And if
I lose is that your hold on me? Your gift?
A double zero to remind the hedger
All bets are off, and he the wager.
A pang--it is not conscience--late but run amok;
A little taste of ashes, on the lips of luck.

Particle physics makes the angels on the heads of pins
Seem realistic. Saints themselves would blush to add up quarks.
The indivisible eludes us, and behind the spin
Of matter lies the paradox of Zeno, threatening
That motion is impossible. It is, or is at least
So circular as not to get us anywhere. How else
Account for the expanding and contracting universe,
Degrees of void, pre-Time, and limits of infinity?
Electron, proton, prion… thence to oxymoron, no?
At astronomic cost in grantsmanship and lobbying
Super colliders model, on a sub-atomic scale,
The pharaonic and improbably colliding worlds
Of Dr. Velikovsky, whom collision profited.
We have entrapped ourselves in bonds where all experiments
Are thought experiments. So too were Zeno’s, only his
Were frankly so. Forever motionless in its one space
Hangs--helpless to traverse in finite time its thought-out course
Of infinite divisions--physics’ arrow. Out of reach
The turtle, and Achilles still behind. The bang was big;
The crunch is coming; science squints. Hair-splitting cracks its lens.

Payload augmented by the latitude,
And that is just as well, if to increase its freight
One adds those who might once have seen it fire.
It is a last escape-kite, bold if much too late,
For both the Devil and his Islanders.
Back to his home black hole the one, to freest space
Each who was prisoner: the murderer,
Child murderer, wife killer, murderer for pay.
To lovely orbit bears the rocket those.
Or, better still, incinerates them as it goes.

Eight decades after its expensive shelling
France winces at the cost of Rheims; San Marco,
One, presumes, floods with the rest of Venice.
Quebec and Spain may fund, exiguously.
Not so the Moslems and the Anglicans,
To whom extravagance is second nature.
A sort of T.E.Lawrence builds among us.
Another century, moreover, battle,
Neglect, or out-and-out iconoclasm
And who will know how new the churches are?
Old fashioned in their time--if you would rather,
Traditional--with changing taste, or distance,
Being there will give them their attractions.
And art historians, who have no conscience,
Will find at last they liked them from the first.
Already, like a pre-echo of footnotes,
One almost hears their pride in their descriptions.
“Victorian Late Cornish-French.” “Alphonsine
Hispanic-Moorish-Merseyside Revival.”
They are in fact Contractor Arts and Craft,
And are entirely flawless in their structure,
As in the scholarship of their detailing,
The which, the lack of Folk Art imperfections,
Peasant whimsy, for the present damn them.
The Folk, meanwhile, defect to the machined.

Fool’s Paradise? And is there any other kind?
The fruits of Eden, we know, now, are largely rind,
And knowledge less a tree than some intrusive graft
That does not take. To know is not so much a craft
As it is exercise in self-deception: Eve
Or Adam, we embrace the Garden that we leave,
Attracted by the warnings put there to deter.
Deep down, it is the challenges that we prefer.
Hunting has more appeal than naming, and the name
Of any beast outside the gate is simply game.
From food to sport to murder is a seamless scale,
But if we break it we return to worm and snail
And that nude pair so bored they took up with a snake.
Cain’s sons are gladiators; Abel’s wield a rake.
If Eve has daughters have they taken to the street
From down the garden path? Had they a choice? Who eat
The fruit the pits will sicken. Checkpoint Angel, sword
Aflame, is subtlety the sin we backslide toward?
